COLDCARE HOME GUIDE · 2026

Planning an ice bath at home.

A practical guide to choosing a setup, assessing your space and understanding the water, power, drainage and maintenance requirements.

HOME OWNERSHIP

A cold-plunge setup within your own space.

A home setup can reduce the need to travel to another facility and can make equipment available according to your own schedule. A chiller-based configuration may also reduce the need to add ice manually.

Convenience does not establish a health, recovery or performance benefit. ColdCare equipment is intended for general wellness and recreational use, and individual experiences vary.

01

Available at home

Use is subject to personal safety, supervision and the requirements of the selected equipment.

02

Temperature management

Selected chillers provide adjustable settings under suitable operating conditions.

03

Different configurations

Choose between a simple vessel, portable tub or compatible tub-and-chiller system.

SETUP OPTIONS

Three common approaches.

01

Ice-cooled bath

A suitable vessel is filled with water and cooled by manually adding ice. The temperature depends on the amount of ice, starting water temperature, vessel and ambient conditions. Ice must be sourced for subsequent sessions.

02

Portable plunge tub

An insulated, inflatable or other purpose-designed vessel may offer easier placement than a fixed bath. Confirm dimensions, capacity, access, drainage and chiller compatibility before purchase.

03

Chiller-based system

A compatible water chiller circulates and cools the water according to its model-specific specification. It requires suitable power, airflow, plumbing connections, drainage and maintenance.

SITE CHECKLIST

What your space needs.

The required footprint is more than the dimensions of the tub. Allow room for the chiller, hoses, ventilation, safe entry and exit, maintenance and drainage.

RequirementWhat to confirm
Structural supportTotal filled weight of the tub, water, equipment and users
Floor and waterproofingWater-resistant surface, spill control and suitability for repeated wet use
DrainageA safe, permitted method for emptying and managing overflow
Electrical supplyA compatible, protected circuit installed and assessed where required
VentilationManufacturer-required airflow and clearances around the chiller
AccessDelivery route, doors, lifts, stairs, turning space and final placement
EnvironmentProtection from weather, direct sun, flooding and unsuitable temperatures
Building approvalLandlord, MCST, management or other approvals where applicable

A general statement such as “1–2 square metres and a standard outlet” is not sufficient to confirm that a site is suitable.

POSSIBLE LOCATIONS

Every location needs its own assessment.

Home gymSuitable ground-floor areaCovered outdoor spaceDedicated wellness roomGarage or utility area

These are examples only, not confirmation of suitability. Balcony installations require particular caution because of structural loading, waterproofing, drainage, weather exposure and building approval.

TEMPERATURE & SAFETY

The minimum setting is not a starting target.

There is no universal temperature or session duration suitable for every person. Beginners should use moderately cool water, brief exposure and appropriate supervision rather than immediately selecting the lowest chiller setting.

  • Never use it alone. Have another responsible adult nearby.
  • Keep your head above water. Avoid diving and sudden full-body submersion.
  • Use a stable entry and exit. Water and cold exposure can increase slip and coordination risks.
  • Stop if you feel unwell. Exit immediately if you feel faint, confused, numb, unusually short of breath or unable to control your breathing.
  • Restrict unsupervised access. Use a suitable cover or barrier and keep children and pets away from the equipment.
  • Consider your health. Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, take medication or have concerns about cold exposure.

ROUTINE CARE

Clean water requires an ongoing routine.

Filtration and circulation do not make water maintenance-free. Follow the product manual and establish a schedule appropriate for the system and usage.

Before useInspect the water, vessel, hoses, fittings, power cable and surrounding floor.
On scheduleClean or replace compatible filters and perform model-specific maintenance.
Water careUse only compatible products and follow their labels, instructions and safety requirements.
Water replacementDrain, clean and refill according to water condition, usage and the product manual.
When unusedUse a suitable cover, restrict access and follow shutdown guidance for the selected system.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common home-setup questions.

Can I install an ice bath at home?

Potentially, if the selected location and services are suitable. Confirm structural loading, waterproofing, drainage, power, ventilation, access and required approvals before purchasing.

Can I put an ice bath on a balcony?

Do not assume so. A filled system can impose significant weight and create drainage and waterproofing risks. Obtain the relevant building approval and qualified structural or technical advice.

Do I need a chiller?

No. Ice can cool a suitable vessel manually. A compatible chiller can provide adjustable temperature management but has additional site, power and maintenance requirements.

How cold should a home ice bath be?

There is no universal setting appropriate for everyone. Do not treat a model's minimum operating temperature as a personal recommendation.
