ColdCare beginner guide

How to take an ice bath.

A practical introduction to preparing, entering and finishing a cold-water immersion session with an emphasis on gradual exposure and personal safety.

Safety comes first

Cold-water immersion can cause a rapid breathing, heart-rate and blood-pressure response. Do not use an ice bath alone. Stop immediately if you feel faint, confused, numb, unusually short of breath or otherwise unwell. Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, take medication or have concerns about cold exposure.

Five basic steps

Prepare the water and surroundings

Use a clean tub with stable entry and exit points. A cold-plunge chiller can maintain a selected temperature without repeatedly adding ice. Confirm the actual water temperature with a suitable thermometer and follow the equipment manual.

Beginners should use a moderate temperature and short exposure rather than starting near the minimum setting of a chiller.

Enter slowly and deliberately

Use a handrail or other stable support where available. Enter gradually, keep your head above water and avoid diving or sudden full-body submersion. Make sure another responsible adult is nearby.

Settle your breathing

Cold water can trigger an involuntary gasp and faster breathing. Focus on a calm, steady exhale. Leave the water immediately if breathing does not settle or you feel unable to remain in control.

Keep the first session brief

There is no single duration that is appropriate for everyone. Temperature, experience, body size, health, supervision and environmental conditions all matter. Beginners should start briefly and follow professional or model-specific guidance instead of trying to reach a fixed target time.

Exit safely and warm gradually

Step out carefully, dry off and put on warm clothing. Move to a comfortable indoor environment and allow normal body temperature to return gradually. Do not drive or operate equipment while shivering, dizzy or impaired.

Temperature guidance

ColdCare chillers have model-specific operating ranges, but the minimum equipment setting is not a recommended starting temperature. Actual water temperature and cooling time vary with the chiller, water volume, ambient temperature, ventilation, insulation and installation.

ExperiencePractical approach
First-time userBegin with moderately cool water, a brief session and direct supervision.
Returning userAdjust only gradually based on prior tolerance and appropriate professional guidance.
Very low temperaturesRequire additional caution and are not suitable for every person. Do not assume colder or longer is better.

What to expect

People use cold-water immersion as part of personal wellness, sport and post-exercise routines. Individual experiences vary. ColdCare products are general-wellness and recreational equipment; they are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a beginner stay in an ice bath?

There is no universal time suitable for every beginner. Start briefly, use a moderate temperature, remain supervised and exit before you lose comfortable control of your breathing or movement.

What temperature should I use?

A beginner should not treat the lowest chiller setting as a target. Start moderately, confirm the temperature independently and follow appropriate professional and product-specific guidance.

How often should I use an ice bath?

Frequency depends on the individual, intended routine, temperature, duration and health considerations. Avoid presenting another person’s schedule as a universal recommendation.

Can I use an ice bath alone?

No. Have another responsible adult nearby, particularly when you are new to cold-water immersion or changing your normal temperature or duration.
